Who Can Apply?

To be Eligible for Canadian citizenship, an individual must satisfy all of the following requirements:

1. Age

- You must be at least 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship. *To apply for citizenship for a child under 18 years of age, certain conditions must be met

2. Permanent resident status

- In order to become a Canadian citizen, an individual must have permanent resident status in Canada.

3. Time lived in Canada

- An adult must have lived in Canada for at least three years (amounting to 1,095 days) in the past four years before applying for citizenship.

* Children under the age of 18 do not need to satisfy this requirement

4. Language abilities

- An individual needs to have adequate knowledge of one of the two official languages of Canada – English or French – in order to become a Canadian citizen.

5. Criminal history (prohibitions)

- An individual who has a criminal history cannot become a Canadian citizen.

6. Knowledge of Canada

- In order to become a Canadian citizen, an individual must: have an understanding of Canada’s institutions, symbols, values and history. In addition, an individual must understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, such as the right and responsibility to vote in elections.
